NAE™ Project:
Update

November 10, 2007

Ladies & Gentlemen:

On Tuesday of last week Ed Shadle, Steve Wallace and Keith Zanghi gave a presentation in Paris France at the 2007 European CATIA Forum.   Located at the Disneyland Convention Center at the New York Disney Hotel, the three were well received by the audience.

Charles & Forrester w/ Shadle & Zanghi

Bernard Charlès and Philippe Forestier of Dassault Systèmes

The presentation, Challenging the World Land Speed Record highlighted the use of Dassault Systèmes flagship product CATIA (Computer Aided Three Dimensional Interactive Applications) and how the team uses the product to design and build details and assemblies for the North American Eagle™  Examples showing NAE sponsors PCB Piezotronics,  Eagle Machine Inc, LevX®, UREMET,  INCAT®, Verisurf Software, FARO Technologies and Wolfe Air Ltd.

This years 2007 European CATIA Forum was one of the largest ever with over 1,240 people in attendance, and many times that more online.  CATIA is the most robust CAD system on the market today.  No wonder companies like Boeing use it to design all of their aircraft.

Proof of the value of the product was demonstrated two weeks ago at our test session at the Black Rock Desert.   We went to Nevada with over 100 tons of equipment, two aircraft, 44 people and a film crew from the Discovery Channel (CBC).  Three months prior to leaving, we were in the midst of an intensive wheel design.   John Mittleider (NAE™ FEA Engineer), Steve Green (Eagle Machine, Inc), Mark Moore (Uremet Corporation), Keith Zanghi and Ed Shadle worked for months coming up with a proven design.   In the last weeks prior to leaving, Mark Moore in Santa Ana and Steve Green in Abbotsford transformed the digital dataset into finished products.   In addition, Eagle Machine, Inc had the added responsibility of doing the final spindle and axle machining.

The value of CATIA can only be realized when you learn that we left for Black Rock without assembling the final components!  The software allowed us to design the parts prior to machining and check for interferences.   When we arrived at Black Rock, Steve Green and Keith Zanghi assembled the rear axle, LevX®  Magnetic Brakes and wheels for the first time.  In fact, the Eagle was assembled with all new running gear for the very first time in the desert!   Without CATIA, we would have been crazy to do what we did.

The attendance at the 2007 European CATIA Forum was an amazing success!  Following the presentation, the three got a commitment from a brand new major sponsor.  Look for an update in a couple of weeks.

Team North American Eagle™ would like to thank Anuska  Eriyagama and Matthieu Tincq for their hospitality during the event.  Look for photos in a future gallery page.

We would also like to thank Island Print Services for the outstanding photo cards that we passed out during the event.

We invite you to add a comment, or remark, about our program or the site.
