NAE™ Project: Update

Featured Sponsors

Interstate Batteries

March 27, 2010

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Today's work party found Sean Rondestvedt, Ed Shadle, Keith Zanghi, Von Armstrong, Chris Greene, John Drury, Mike Thoe and John Winchester meeting at our Spanaway, Washington hangar.

Work continued on the front wheel fairing mount.  Ed and Sean spent most of the day riveting and installing nut plates that will eventually secure an aerodynamically designed fairing forward of the front wheel.  As is often the case, access from the cockpit is cramped, and work underneath requires a flat on the back looking up position. Not easy but the work gets done.

Class was in session Saturday as Keith gave a demonstration to Chris on how easy it is to calculate dynamic pressure using the HP50g Scientific and Graphing Calculator. HP Calculators is the official calculator sponsor for the North American Eagle™ Every Eagle engineer, designer and education team member uses the HP50g on the North American Eagle™ Look for an official announcement in the coming weeks.

All in all, the weather cooperated today; the sun peeked out a few times, it only hailed once, and the temperature was just warm enough to preclude the use of Keith's favorite (but extremely loud) heater!

Colonel Joe Kittinger, USAF (Ret) Keynote Speaker at Puyallup Fairgrounds

On Sunday, Col Joe Kittinger spoke to a packed house as the keynote speaker at the Washington Aviation Association conference. Located in the Puyallup Fairgrounds Conference Center, Col Joe spoke to a packed audience about his career in aviation. The one hour presentation was a cliff notes version of his recent book Come Up and Get Me, It was a long day for Col Joe and his wife Sherry as he signed autographs before and after the event.

Many of the North American Eagle™ team members were in the audience. Prior to his talk, Col Joe introduced Ed and Keith to the attendees. It was quite an honor when you think of the man who gave the introduction! His achievements would fill a couple of our updates!

Col. Joe is most famous for his participation in Project Manhigh and Project Excelsior, holding the records for having the highest, fastest and longest skydive and as being the first man to make a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a gas balloon. Serving as a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, he was shot down and spent 11 months in a North Vietnamese prison.

Col. Joe has received numerous awards including receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross twice and being awarded the Harmon Trophy by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In 1997 Col Joe was enshrine in the National Aviation Hall of Fame. He is twice receipt of the FIA Montgolfier Diplome - 1983 & 1984: The highest award given to a balloonist each year.

He was first introduced to the team by the late Ed Drumheller and his wife Barbara. Barbara was on hand for the presentation and also acted as chauffeur and innkeeper while the Kittingers were in town.

Ed, Keith and Steve Wallace will be traveling to Col Joe Kittinger's hometown of Orlando, FL in early April, to give a presentation at COE 2011 Annual PLM Conference and TechniFair. The three will be keynote speakers.

We know a lot of our fans are on facebook.  Now the North American Eagle™ is on facebook!   In fact many of our team members are also!  Tell your friends! It's fun!
