NAE™ Project:
Update Archive

July 28, 2006

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Today Team North American Eagle™ made an appearance at the Boeing Frederickson Plant as one of the displays for their 2006 Safety Fair.

Von Armstrong, Steve and Libby Wallace, Tim Finley, Bill Eckberg and Keith Zanghi help man the 40 foot booth as hundreds of 1st, 2nd and 3rd shift employees made their way past the popular display.

This was an exciting event as the team unveiled their brand new Signs By Tomorrow welcoming poster.  The 5 foot tall version of the Doug Schwartz poster could be seen from several hundred feet away. It  was like a LevX Magnet drawing in the crowds. With the other 8 Signs By Tomorrow the audience was treated to a visual and written history and status of the North American Eagle™ project.

Also on display was the LevX / McVay Mobile Welding / S&S Turbine Services J-79 cut-away jet engine. Featuring a LevX magnetic coupler to simulate the rear braking on the NAE™, the device is used to turn the turbine shaft and show visitors how a jet engine works. The display normally is used to teach students the basics of turbine operations, but is great for showing adults too!  In addition, the 1:18 scale model hand built by Russ Garlow was a great alternative to the real Eagle which was not possible to be displayed at the show.

Also attending the show was one of NAE™'s longtime sponsor, Oregon Aero. Located in Scappoose Oregon, this company has changed the aerospace Industry with their line of safety related products supporting the world’s air forces. They were here today to show of their full line of industry ergonomic products. Running the display was Casey and Carolyn Dennis. Each took time to come by the NAE™ booth and talk with the crew.  Photographs of the Eagle are featured in their very popular catalog. On August 10th the two will be joined by Oregon Aero's founder Mike Dennis at the Boeing Everett Safety Fair. Bill Eckberg, Russ Garlow and some of the other team members will be participating in that show too.

One of the displays was an Army Rescue Helicopter out of Yakima WA. Paul and Nicole gave Tim a tour of the UH-1 Huey. It was special for Tim as he was one of the developers of the NVIS (Night Vision Imaging System) that is used by all helicopters and aircraft today for flying at night. Recently Paul and Nicole were involved in a mountain rescue on Mount Rainier. Nicole is the medical technician and is lowered up to 250 feet on a cable into dangerous areas as Paul holds a steady hover above. Tim jokingly tried to arrange a ride, including going over to the hangar a few miles away and siphoning off 200 gallons of Jet A out of the Eagle, but he was graciously turned down! Team NAE™ has shared displays with every branch of US Armed Forces, including the Canadian Air Force and is thankful for brave men and women who allow us to pursue our dream to break the World Landspeed record challenge.
