NAE™ Project: Update

Motor Sports history comes to the Tacoma Dome & Exhibition Hall in November!

By Robert Stanley

To write about northwest motor sports is always a pleasure. To write about a show that is certain to become nationally recognized is a dream come true for this writer.

The dream will become a reality November 7th, 8th and 9th at the Tacoma Dome and Exhibition Hall when the doors open for MotorSports 2008, the largest, most exciting and energetic show of its kind ever seen in the northwest! The lineup of motor sports vehicles and dignitaries is overwhelming to say the least. Can you imagine 300 Vintage Classics, Concourse, Custom, Dragsters, Go-Carts, Hydroplanes, Indy Cars, Midgets, Motorcycles, and other special interest vehicles under one roof? Well it’s true and you, your family and friends will not want to miss this supercharged event.

The organizers of MotorSports 2008 have done a superb job of providing the general public with a once in a lifetime motor sports show. Rumor has it that this is just the beginning of what will be a nationally renowned show and in our backyard. The following is but a sample of what to expect in November. Remember the dates, November 7th, 8th and 9th. Be part of history.

Walt Austin Racing (W.A.R.) the first family of racing in the northwest will have an outstanding display of race cars and classics. Walt and his famous Son Pat, nationally known funny car driver will also have a NASCAR simulator available for the general public to enjoy.

Kasey Kahne inc. will be well represented. Tammy Kahne, the famous NASCAR driver’s Mother will be in attendance displaying an outstanding collection of Kasey’s memorabilia.

Bill Cotter, nationally known vintage race car driver from Seattle will have a collection of rare vintage race cars including a 1957 fuel injected corvette.

Ed Shadle will have a 3 car display including his world renowned North American Eagle, 56 feet long and weighing 13,000 pounds. Ed hopes to break the land speed record of 762 mph in the very near future.

Jerry “the King” Ruth will have his famous dragster and other classics on display. Jerry will also have a booth available for the collector.

Dominic Dobson, former Indianapolis “500” driver and Director of Corporate Development for LeMay, America’s Car Museum will feature several rare classic vehicles.

Vintage Motorcycle Enthusiasts (VME) will be displaying 100 rare motorcycles dating back to 1913. Included in the collection are some very rare sidecars.

Glen Seidelman, President of the Washington Midget Racing Association (WMRA) will have a display of early 1940’s Midgets and some newer Midgets. (Kasey Kahne started his racing career driving Midgets).

Dave Lehmann, President of Grand Prix Raceway in Lakewood, Washington has been racing Go Carts since he was 10 years old. A National Go Cart Champion in 2004, Dave won the “Troy Ruttman Award” this year. Dave will be displaying his championship Go Carts.

David Williams, Executive Director of the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum from Kent, Washington will have the largest and most elaborate display in the history of the sport in the 30,000 square foot Exhibition Hall. Between 30 and 40 hydroplanes from the 40’s to the current date will be on display. Invited to the show during the weekend are racing greats Chip Hanauer, Billy Schumacher, Dave Villwock and George Henley. David’s Son Shane Thompson who just recently turned 14, was a national champion in his class in 2007, will have his hydroplane on display. Spectators will be able to meet, greet, talk to and acquire autographs during the weekend. The Hydroplane display will include a very nice souvenir booth for the hydroplane collector. There will be a free souvenir for the first 10,000 spectators at the show.

A variety of commercial booths will compliment show. One booth will be selling official event items including the event shirt. Certain to be a collector’s item, this beautiful multi-colored shirt will sell for $18-$20. Admission for the show is just $12.50 for adults and children under age 10 are free when accompanied with a regular adult admission. Discount tickets are available at all Walt’s Auto Care Centers and Schuck’s Auto Supply stores in Western Washington. Please call our office at 253.922.5111 for additional discount ticket outlets. For groups of 10 or more we will mail them at no charge.

Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center.

Show hours: Friday, November 7th; NOON to 9PM – Saturday, November 8th; 10AM to 9PM Sunday, November 9th; 10AM to 6PM. There will be a limited number of posters available at the show. Go to the Walt’s Auto Care Centers booth, they will make a nice collectible. Be sure to bring your cameras and camcorders!
